Book Review – The Fires of Heaven

Author: Robert Jordan

Binding: Paperback
Publication Date: 1993

I think I’ve finally overextended myself. I’ve been forced to refer to somebody else’s summary to write my review. And while I refuse to give up on the Wheel Of Time series, I need to take a break after this book.

This book was almost all about Rand. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it became rather stale. Likely because it showed you bits of this and that, but never a full view of anything. I’m thinking Jordan is building up to something, but at this point, the only thing built up was my boredom. For the first time I actually found myself zoning out large portions of the book. And I didn’t even notice anything missing.

So far this series is starting to show signs of being what we’d call a “rabbit” in Cross Country. Starting fast and finishing slow. And that’s what it continues to do, slipping down a notch with each book. The only saving grace for this one was the last few chapters. I literally felt like I woke up from a coma and saw a rainbow. The action kept my attention and kept me interested.

But I don’t feel that I can continue showing my interest at the moment. Using the line I always loved to hear, “I just need my space.” Yet, unlike those wonderful ladies who needed space and kept on walking, I will come back to the Wheel Of Time series. I am not giving up. I refuse to stop halfway through the series and not finish it. Part of my motivation is simply to finish the series (being a completist helps). But the big part of my motivation is simply wanting to know what happens at the end. What finally happens to Rand, Mat, and Perrin.
