Book Review – Kitty Goes to Washington

Author: Carrie Vaughn
Publisher: Warner Books
Binding: Paperback
Publication Date: July 2006

Kitty Goes to Washington by Carrie Vaughn is a somewhat humorous tale of a modern-day werewolf who has proclaimed herself to the public via her nighttime radio show. On The Midnight Hour, her weekly show, Kitty takes calls from people who are either like herself, unusual in other ways or just want to be.

Because of her celebrity status, Kitty is called to Washington, D.C. to appear before a congressional hearing regarding federal funding for a scientific institute that is studying the makeup of supernaturals like werewolves and vampires.

While in Washington, Kitty must confront a senator whose religious fervor wants to denounce all supernatural creatures as ungodly and devil-spawned. If that is not bad enough, she has accepted the hospitality of the local vampire mistress, meets an enclave of international weres, including an extremely sexy were-jaguar, and certainly not least a man who has created a cult for vampires and werewolves who just want to be normal again.

The book is full of fun and intrigue. A lighthearted fantasy that nonetheless has a little bit to say about our bureaucracy, red-tape and power. Vaughn touches on a little bit of everything while delivering an enjoyable read. The fallacies of preconceived notions, ideas on friendship and loyalty are all explored to some extent. Even though this is the second in the series, it can definitely be read as a stand-alone. She does reference past events but only as bare background, there is no need to have that knowledge in order to enjoy this book.

The author has also incorporated several secondary plot points that could easily become the central premise for further books in the series. I will say that, while it was a quick and enjoyable read, there were several instances where the characters were either two dimensional or dropped out of the established character. I would not consider this a major flaw when you consider that this is only the author’s second book. I believe that she will continue to improve upon her writing and give us a series worth following.
