At some point in our lives, we’ve all known that person who has a passion about something that they share with everyone – in a way that is so completely annoying that it makes you want to be violently ill (and if you haven’t known someone like that…) In D.A. by Connie Willis, Theodora Baumgarten is surrounded by an entire school of people who aspire to become the next cadet to the IASA – the last thing Theodora wants for herself. Imagine her surprise when she is chosen one as of the 300 world-wide new cadets, especially since she did not even apply. Now she is surrounded by 299 of the people who wanted it most…which literally makes her violently ill (OK, maybe it’s just space sickness).

This short story follows Theodora as she rebels against the system with the help of her hacker best friend, Kimkim, and tracks down exactly how this happened. The result is a fun story of intelligence, independence, and rebellion against authority – part of each of us wishes this is how we would react in a similar situation. Hopefully we’ll see more of Theodora and Kimkim in the future from Willis.
