The ten novels make me feel rather lucky as the out of the 5 I’ve read on the Nebula ballot, 2 of them were on my own list more than a year ago. The other two I have read were Daniel Abraham’s Betrayal in Winter and Pratchett’s Making Money. Abraham’s second installment to his Long Price Quartet is frankly a bump in the road. I really enjoyed the first book, and think the third, An Autumn War, brought the series back on track from Betrayal in Winter, which I thought was a bit of a stumble.
The book just prior to Making Money was Going Postal, a book I thought was one of Pratchett’s strongest ever. Making Money, however was just too much a retread from Going Postal, and even worse too soon a retread. I’m not sure what it’s doing on the list frankly, though if Going Postal swept awards the year before; I would not argue.
Considering some of the novels that came out in the time frame, I find the list interesting, but would be pleased to see Goonan or Barzak win. Both were terrific books, and if they don’t give it to Barzak now, they will have to give it to him for his second book later. It should be noted that I tend to always find the Nebula ballot interesting.
A lot of this the short fiction occurred when I was knee-deep in Heliotrope submissions. I was purposely avoiding most short fiction at the time, thus I don’t really have an opinion on the nominees.
BookSpot Central would like to congratulate all the nominees and wish all participates the best of luck!
