Ah, romance. The most memorable and tortuous romance for me would that in the story of Ladyhawke. Navarre and Isabeau, cursed to forever be apart as he is a wolf by night and she is a hawk by day, always together but still ever apart. And they never give up their love for each other. Sigh. I can't say what kind of influence it had on me regarding romance (I'm rather practical and no-nonsense when it comes to love) but ever since I've thought the name Isabeau as the most beautiful name.

I have always loved the story of Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning, but Elizabeth's father was not 'villainous' in real life. Fathers in that place and time thought it their duty to be tyrants in the domestic sphere. He loved his daughter and was concerned for her health and welfare, and if she were to marry it should be to someone strong, rich and successful and able to take care of her.

Check out my story on my blog at

Thanks, Pieta

Mis-understood question or not, this is a fabulous article. I really liked the insight and it didn't really matter what question was being answered. It turned out, more than anything, to be definitions of romance, which is quite interesting. Everyone has such interesting viewpoints and interesting references.

Good job!

Yeah I want to apologize to everyone, Jay and myself had a disconnect. I actually did mine based on what had the most influence on me as well. And I had two of them one for tv/movies one for books. Jay is the editor and cracked the whip at me also!

Um...the question I got was phrased as which romances had the most influence on us, not which were our favorites.

In case anyone is wondering why I answered in such a curmudgeonly (but honest) way. ;-)

Happy V-Day!
