I have always thought about trying to cover Lost, and then gotten scared and decided against it because it is a show where every week there is so much going on and so much to talk about. That and so many sites talk about Lost what else could I say. So that being said, this will be more of a discussion then a review, because I have tons of questions that someone else may have the answer to.
This was a Sayid-centric episode, and the flashbacks were not really game changers but rather showed how he got into his current predicament and filled in some gaps for us. Sayid has been one of the characters with an interesting background and I found it very interesting how they played into the angle of Sayid really kills to protect others. We start with Sayid with his younger brother and how he kills the chicken for him so that his father will let his older brother back in the house. Do we ever get to find out more about Sayid’s older brother? This also brings a bit of insight to why Sayid kills for Ben to protect his friends on the island, and how Ben uses that angle to have Sayid work for him. It is quite telling when Ben is done with Sayid how he just casts him aside. All that killing does not go unnoticed though and Sayid is answering for it, which is why he ends up on the plane with the crew going back to the island. I actually liked how how nice and tight the story was for getting Sayid back on the plane. Also a funny moment how Sayid tries to get out of taking that exact plane when he sees Jack, Hurley, Kate and Sun. It also makes more sense now that Sayid is building houses to atone for all his killing.
Back on the island, we get the real meat of this episode, Sayid comes up with his own plan of what he needs to do, and while he does give away the truth of how he got to the island after being drug induced, we see that it does not change much. So as his plan continues we learn a lot more about Ben and his relationship with his father and his obsession with the Hostiles. It all makes more sense now. It also shows that Ben understands Sayid a bit more then Sayid would first believe in the future. Sayid does trick Ben and while out in the jungle shoots him, but Sayid has not been paying much attention to how time travel works and this being the island rest assured Ben will live to see another day (one would sure think). What this does do though is have an interesting effect on the rest of Ben’s life which then brings him more in line with current day Ben. Can anything change the future? When Faraday interacted with Desmond, was that something that already happened or something he changed? It seems to be that it was meant to happen if you go with the other reasoning Faraday has given.
The other story that was done this week revolved around Sawyer and Juliet. Will they still be a couple now that Kate and Jack have arrived. Hmm . . . not so interesting for me, but it does make sense. I mean Sawyer and Juliet have been there for a long time, and the three of them (Jin, Sawyer, Juliet) have been the only ones that really know what is happening around them. The dynamic will lead to some interesting conflict in the future and we did need this setup of that in this episode.
Most interesting part of the episode for me: When Sayid is being tortured by Oldham (William Sanderson) and he tells them of all the future events. The looks on the Dharma folks faces was great. Makes for an interesting day when someone can tell you about the future huh Horace?
Book note: Ben gave Sayid A Separate Reality by Carlos Casteneda.

When this comes on here I will be back to poke fun at you
Lost is a bit harder to cover than some other shows that is for sure. I tried to hit what was important or exciting to me.
I didn’t read it (can’t have my weekly Lost spoiled).
You did a fine job of covering the episode.
Sayid shooting Ben when Ben was just a kid…this is why time-travel stories confuse and frustrate me. And yet, I tune in every week for more confusion and frustration.
Sawyer & Juliet hooking up came as a surprise to me, but I hope they remain a couple. Kate made it pretty clear where her heart lies, yet when she saw Sawyer again, she seemed to have second thoughts. Love, it’s kind of like time travel, confusing and frustrating.
