The Book of Eli video (on set featurette)
Another little featurette from ET, this one of The Book of Eli, the post-apocalyptic western being filmed by the Hughes Brothers.
Starring Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, and Ray Stevenson, with a scheduled release of January 2010.
The film’s description is “A post-apocalyptic Western, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind”. I kind of dig the Hughes Brother’s movies because I’m from that generation where Menace to Society was everybody’s favorite movii when it came out and Dead Presidents is in my mind and underrated film.

I have to admit that I would have described myself as ‘not’ a Western fan until I saw Deadwood and read Blood Meridian. Both were among the very best experiences I’ve had in their respective mediums.

The real question, of course, is whether it can meet the standard set for westerns by The Proposition. Interesting that it will be out within a few months of The Road, also from John Hillcoat.

I think westerns, as a genre, are at a much lower standard than what the best of the genre is. When they’re good, they’re awesome. When they’re ok, they’re…ok to kind of lame.
But I grew up watching Westerns with a family friend, so I have an interest in them–and exacting standards for them.
