Another week and we have another episode of Reaper that is humorous, has a great story, and offers a nice level of continuity with the characters that provides the viewer satisfaction. I am glad that whatever arguing behind the scenes before season two tipped in the balance of having a second season, because television viewers would have been shafted if not. The other thing worth mentioning here is I talk to a lot of people about television and for some reason this show just is not on their radar. So take up the banner and if you are a fan spread the word.
Morgan (guest star Armie Hammer) tells Andi (Missy Peregrym) that Sam (Bret Harrison) is the Devil’s (Ray Wise) son. An escaped soul leaves her baby behind, causing Sam, Sock (Tyler Labine) and Ben (Rick Gonzalez) to turn to Tony (Ken Marino) for help.
There is so much going on in the Reaper Universe that the writers really have to pick and choose who and what they are going to work on during that week. While others may see this as something that can be annoying, I find it builds excitement and leads to some “Oh yeah” cool moments for the viewer. The reasoning is, once again, that the writers have a firm grasp on continuity. This seemed to be a bit of a setup issue as well introducing what may be a new arch, as well and fleshing out some old ones.
The soul of the week is a lady that has escaped from Hell, and thinks that she was a vampire in real life… Not a big deal as Sam stakes her pretty early in the episode. The issue is that she had a baby on Earth and it is left behind for the crew to deal with. Three Men and a Babycomedy surfaces, but at the end of the day they entrust the baby to Tony. Sam tries to play the Devil by keeping the baby on Earth in many ways and finally, but I am sure because the Devil really wants it that way, they come to an agreement. This can not be the last of this thread I am sure though, should be interesting how this turns out. Every time the viewer thinks Sam has pulled one over on the Devil, we find out that it really is not the case. I mean its the damn Devil, he has gotta be harder to fool then just making up a spotty lie.
Back to an old arch though, actually the first season’s cliff hanger, we find out what Sam’s Dad was up to. I found it a little interesting that while Sam’s Dad could not talk about the deal, that maybe the Devil really is not Sam’s biological father. There was just enough in there to give us some doubt. Well, Sam’s Dad is a zombie now, because he can not die, but that does not mean he stays a warm fleshy human either. Good carry over from the previous storyline. Since his Dad can not really go out during the day and hang out with normal people he keeps on pestering Sam to play badminton, or watch the game etc… His Dad should know that Sam is busy containing the souls that escape from Hell! It was pretty funny and will be even better now that his Dad is living in the detached garage.
On the Andi front, Morgan (Armie Hammer) tells Andi that Sam is the Devil’s son and when she finds out that it is true from Sam she flips. I mean after all Andi has seen, I really did not think she would flip that bad. Is working for the Devil any less horrible then being related to him? Personally I think working for him might be worse. Also I want some more Andi vs Ted confrontation going on, but alas everything can not be done in one week. Maybe Reaper episodes should be 2 hours a week. Can’t wait till next week.
Wait…who can forget about Sock…he goes to the doctor for chemical castration because he is longing after his step-sister…a little over the top, but funny
Few notes:
- Sam using his Dad to scare Sock and then Ben was a great scene
- Sock naming the baby Magnum P.I. was Sock being Sock
- Kristen is hot doing anything including karaoke
- Morgan (Armie Hammer) reminds me of Captain Awesome from Chuck
