This is a kind of special edition of Short Thoughts on Short Fiction. The five stories here were in consideration until the very end for The Spinetingler Awards, long listed if you will. The final selection process was difficult and these stories just missed the cut. There were a couple of other stories and those will make an appearance in later editions. All of these stories are in the 4 to 5 star range.
Out on Joppa by Robert Ward – This story has a great polished feel to it, which is expected when someone like Ward is doing the telling. He has created a great character voice. The first sentence is a fumble that may or may not be a part of the characters voice but it does straightens out.
Coming Up Roses by Damien Seaman – A simple story simply and effectively told. It was the perfect length and the restraint served it well.
Watching by Julie Morgan – These are some slight Godfather undertones here with Tiffany reminding me of a Connie Corleone type character and David Green reminding me of Carlo. This story runs a little long but over all is pretty good. My favorite part was actually the 2 PI’s. I liked how their job was presented, the dialog, and their interactions.
Jello’s Escape by Nicole Fix – This was just a nasty, nasty little story. You sit there and wonder if the daughter is really like that or if you can trust the mother’s judgment. You won’t read another one like this.
Eight Times in the Everywhere by Gabe Durham – This was a very over the top story, which is very much a part of its appeal. In fact, I’d feel comfortable saying that this story is more then a little insane.

I liked all of these stories but WATCHING is very, very good.
Brian,
Thanks for taking the time to look at both of my sites: Powder Burn Flash and Darkest Before the Dawn. It is a true labor of love and I’m blessed with writers who put out some great writing.
