In April we were very excited about Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Michael Chabon’s involvement in the adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic John Carter of Mars film, and now we have a small update on the progress of film.
NBC affiliate KSL in Utah is reporting that John Carter of Mars will be filmed in their state, a direct result of their new movie incentives bill. They state:
“This is over 400 people involved in full-time work for seven-straight months here in the State of Utah. This is going to put our film crews to work. It’s really going to put us on the map as a place to film,” Perry said.
The film is being directed by Andrew Stanton who has a couple of obscure movies called Finding Nemo and WALL-E among his credits. The film will be an adaptation of A Princess of Mars (1917), the first of his Barsoom novels, and will represent Stanton’s first live action project.
In an interesting tidbit, /Slashfilm is reporting that Tom Cruise may have been circling this project at one point.
This is three big time news items today about films being adapted from essential pieces of Fantastic Fiction.
