This was on my radar (though it seems like it’s been taking awhile) because it was a comic book written by Greg Rucka and (with art by Steve Lieber) that was nominated for Eisner’s in the categories of Best Writer, Best Artist, Best Limited Series, and Best Graphic Album. That it grabbed such a high profile lead (Kate Beckinsale) also interested me and I remember listening to a comic-book based podcast where Rucka spoke very enthusiastically about being on the set.
I shouldn’t have been too surprised by the Beckinsale cast though as Whiteout is directed by Dominic Sena, who was behind films like Swordfish, Gone in Sixty Seconds and Kalifornia; movies featuring people like Brad Pitt, Juliette Lewis, David Duchovny, John Travolta, Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman, and Nicolas Cage. While his catalog is not representative of my all time favorite films, one can definitely see a sensibility that would work well in an adaptation for Whiteout.
This movie seems like it should have been out already but now it looks like (from reading various places online) it has a September release date attached to.
Synopsis:
Carrie Stetko, the lone U.S. Marshal assigned to Antarctica, is investigating the continent’s first murder, which draws her into a shocking mystery. Now, with only three days until winter, Carrie must solve the crime before Antarctica is plunged into darkness and she is stranded with the killer.

The only reason I know about this movie is because it was Kate’s next film and I was looking forward to it. It has been in production forever which makes me wonder how good it is. However, this first trailer looks pretty interesting. Kate with a gun–I’m there!
Definitely an at least rentable movie for me. I’m a fan of the writer of the source material, at least a competent director, and Kate-factor gives it at least that.
Just in case anyone is interested in looking at the comic the movie is based on (especially now that the trailer seems to be down), Steve Lieber, the artist, has the full first issue on his site:
