Though lets be honest it probably won’t resemble Stephenson’s book. The Diamond Age is being produced by George Clooney (along with Grant Heslov).
That they are making the show is not new, this was reported in 2007, but now according to Variety, Zoe Green has been named to write the script for SciFi that’s described oddly as:
futuristic society where one man feels there is no more creativity. He then creates an interactive book that his daughter can use. She takes the book and unlocks a parallel world.
Stephenson is one of my favorite writers (the ambition of the Baroque Cycle is still daunting even in hindsight). I wonder exactly how much Clooney will be involved and a part of me wishes frequent collaborator Steven Soderbergh was involved, as I look back at the Clooney produced projects I enjoyed and he’s very present. Still, Clooney is a pimp and maybe he can reverse what I’d call a very questionable track record at the channel in adapting big time SF/F novels.
