Lots of YA related news today. Disney has acquired the film rights to Aprilynne Pike’s Wings, a novel published by Harper Teen in May, and the first in her planned Laurel series. It’s being reported that the series is going to be used as a Miley Cyrus vehicle.
Pike topped the bestsellers list with Wings and Variety is reporting this synopsis:
Cyrus would play a seemingly ordinary girl named Laurel who discovers she is a faerie sent among humans to guard the gateway to Avalon. When Laurel is thrust into the midst of a centuries-old battle between faeries and trolls, she’s torn between a human and a faerie love, as well as her loyalties to each world.
The film will be made by the producers of Twilight.
Apparently the next books will be titled Spells (2010) and Enchantments (2011).
i am dissapointed. They could find somebody better than Miley to play the role of Laurel.
i loved the book and am excited that it is being made into a series. But Miley really? She doesn’t fit the discription of Laurel and in my opinion can’t act she can barely sing.
Let’s just hope they find someone better to play Laurel for the hopes of the movie being as good as the book.
I agree. I fell in love with the series and now, I’m disappointed. I never (in a long shot) pictured Miley to be Laurel. Who knows? Maybe or maybe not, Miley will be good playing her part. But to me, I thought it was disappointing news.

Okay, first off i would like to say I like Disney movies FOR CHILDREN. The target audience for this book is teenagers. We are the readers who made this book popular so why would you get Disney, as great as they are, to make a teen movie? So far Disney has not done well in making teen movies, so I think it is unfair of them to adapt a book that could quite possibly be the next twilight and effects all the fans by potentially ruining the book.
Second, why the hell would anyone want Miley Cyrus to star in this movie. I am sure she is great in her TV series and sure some of her music may be good but that’s because all of the work she has done has always centered around HER and never truly involved her getting into a character that was not herself. The only movie she ever starred in was a movie about her, where she could sing and dance her songs and not have to truly immerse herself in to a character. Laurel is a shier off-beat character that even a truly skilled actor would have difficulty portraying, let alone a teenager who pretty much never truly “acted”.If Miley Cyrus does become Laurel I sincerely hope that work will be done with her to truly make the movie half as good as the book. It would be such a shame if the movie was a let down. If she tries to be in the soundtrack also i will really be disappointed. There is nothing else for me to do but wait and see the trailer, if I can see that it is a total train wreck. These are all just my opinions and I truly mean no offense to anyone.

I will also be disappointed if Miley Cyrus is chosen for the part of Laurel, I would probably not see the movie if she is chosen for the part. Laurel is supposed to have light green eyes, blonde hair and have a slender face. She is also supposed to sing beautifully and I would not call one song sung by Miley Cyrus beautiful. I imagined Laurel as being delicate, reserved and graceful. Miley Cyrus does not posses these characteristics, and I think she would have a difficult time portraying them. There are so many better options.

I really don’t like the idea of Miley playing the part of Laurel, but I am really thrilled the book is becoming a series. That is awesome, but a complicated part like that shouldn’t be just given to someone because they are famous. I like Miley, but she just don’t have the talent to pull this role off. Someone else should get it who has the skill to do this role right.

Wings was one of the best sotries I have ever read, but my face totally fell when I heard Miley was going to play Laurel. I agree that Taylor Swift should play Laurel and maybe some other girls who most people believe will play Laurel really well. Wings is a really great book, but it will be ruined and some people who never heard of Wings will probably hear about the movie first, hear Miley’s name, and never touch Aprilynne Pike’s amazing book.
My friends and I all loved the book Wings and when we found out that Miley Cyrus, possibly the worst actress in the world, was playing Laurel, we were shocked. Who would want to ruin this book so much that they would put Miley Cyrus as Laurel??? This movie doesn’t stand a chance of being even 1% as good as the book as long as Disney keeps her as Laurel. Also why Disney? Even without Miley, they couldn’t make it good. I am extremely disappointed in anyone who had any part in giving the film rights to them. Aprilynne Pike wrote a YOUNG ADULT /TEEN fiction story! Those trolls get pretty grossly killed at one point and yeah, of course little kids will love watching that on the big screen.

No, its not very often a change is made because of faceless fans write comments asking (heh, more like demanding) the big corporate guys to make changes so their preferences are on the screen (and instead of in their heads) but what I can say now is that if Disney really thinks that Miley Cyrus is the absolute, perfect, no doubt in mind atress for the part, then fine, yes. But they should keep in mind that you don’t only produce a movie for the all money and the fame, but for all of us. The audience.
This is a tremendous let down! I LOVED the book but there is absolutely no way that I will see the movie with Miley Cyrus in it. She is completely talentless… and the worst working actress out there. This is an absolute disappointment. I feel like the fans of the book will not be happy, this book may be for young adults but Miley Cyrus is popular to 7 year olds not young adults. She does not have nearly enough talent to appeal to teens or anyone older.

Miley is great. She will do an amazing job no matter what you guys think. She is a great singer and acter. Not only is she fabulous, she is pretty and a great role modle. There are thousands of miley fans and she will get they sales up just fine. They can’t get a few downers get in the way. So many of you guys say that miley is bad because she dosent fit to the discription or she isnt grasefull enough. But seriously! Its called acting. And they can change her apperance. It is all part of her role as a celebrity. For you miley haters, you cant seriously say that your not gonna see the movie just because she is in it. The book is great and that is all that matters. Besides you cant judge the movie when you havent seen it. So miley haters will still get sales up aswell.

I don’t like the idea of Miley being in the movie at all. When I read the book, I imagined Laurel with blonde hair(obviously) and a natural look. But knowing that Miley’s playing the part– totally ruined my image of her. I mean, just look at the picture she had above, nothing looks natural at all! I’m sorry Miley. Wow, you guy’s are forgetting that temple hill will also be in the running to make this movie! No offence, but I read twilight and loved it and loved the actors but the movie made my heart sink! From then on I stopped liking twilight stuff and put all my Twi-books in a box under my bed were I won’t be reminded of them. And second of all I hope these people involved with the movie read this and re-cast the actors and wait a few more years till the book is well known. I love this book. And while Disney has had some good movies in the past its recent track record has left much to be desired. I mean really there choice in actresses went downhill since Ella Enchanted (a really good book but Ann Hathaway should not have been cast as a 13 year old girl since she was like 25) Most people think that Miley Cyrus ruins everything she touches and I agree. Miley Cyrus she stay her little teeny bopper self and not try to be part of movies that actually have GOOD plot lines from GREAT books. I am appauled that Hollywood would even consider having Disney as the sponsor… I mean come on, Disney is for CHILDREN not the TEEN/YOUNG ADULT audience that is needed for Wings, as a book and as a movie. Wings has so many aspects to it they have to consider, like the part where David and Laurel get thrown into the Chetco River and when Tamani finds the trolls and does a complete 360 with their heads, he also gets shot twice I mean seriously you can’t leave that out of the movie… it’s a big part that comes in handy later… again Disney is for CHILDREN with Miley Cyrus as Laurel you’d get the wrong audience and wouldn’t get the book right as a movie. Disney would end up cutting things out, to consider their normal audience, things that are important that are also not meant to be seen by CHILDREN. Sure it’s also supposed to be an enchanting movie because the book certainly is but they’ve just got it ALL wrong. Personally I don’t think Disney should do this book as a movie, find a different sponsor.
I do NOT mean to speak for Aprilynne Pike but I believe just as well as many others that she deserves much better… a better Laurel, and a better sponsor. Like many others have pointed out Laurel is blonde… yeah I get it, there is hair dye and wigs and colored contacts and this thing called acting but it goes SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much farther than that. Laurel is supposed to be a soft-spoken, smooth-vioced, beautiful, graceful, blonde, skinny, capable of singing and guitar playing 15 year old faerie with, I’d imagen a narrow face, I believe she’s short too and she also has a light complextion… skin, hair, eyes, you get my point… which is SOOO obviously NOT what Miley IS – Miley is tall, tan, brunette, and I think she has brown eyes… so correct me IF I’m wrong.
Going back to the “this thing called acting”… Miley can’t even do that, she’s always been in a show and movie about HER where she just has to be herself in front of camera. She’s never had to actually become someone else in something she does, and she’s really only famous because of her father. Thing about it, what percentage of actually talented people that are not famous by family or assoctiation get discovered? Well it’s not real high that’s for sure. I mean seriously Taylor Launter was discovered by a Hollywood producer during a karate practice, that is pretty amazing!! But to be famous just because you say something to the effect of I want my own show and I want to become a singer when you’re like 11 (and that’s what practically every 11 year old girl wants) to your dad, and your dad is famous… do you really think he’s going to try to deny her that, uhm no he’s not.

“There has been a lot of negative feedback about Miley Cyrus playing “Laurel” for the Disney version of the book, “Wings”. As a fan of the book, I too am upset by the choice made by the producers of the book-based film. After reading some thoughts from the author, Aprilynne Pike herself, I’ve decided we as fans need to take a stand. Aprilynne stated that she is excited for the film regardless of who the producers chose to play the lead character since it’s a huge step for the book and her career. Her words were encouraging and she didn’t want us as fans to be upset with her since it wasn’t her choice and other than allowing the book to be made into a film, she had no hand in it otherwise.
So here’s what I propose we do. We need to contact Disney Motion Pictures and voice our opinions as to what we think of Miley being cast as “Laurel”. The least we can do is say that we tried and if we get enough of a fan base back up, maybe they’ll at least take it into consideration.
I’ve done some research and found the name of the Vice President of Casting at Disney. Let’s join together as fans and do something about this!!! Every letter counts and we need to do this incredible book some justice.

Okay, okay, okay. I hate Miley Cyrus with a burning passion and I would DIE if Disney picked her or any other of their zero-talent, low-life, fame-seeking, wannabes. I already died a little inside when I saw that Disney bought the rights to Wings. Everyone saw how good Mia Wasikowska did in Alice in Wonderland. She played the main role and everybody LOVED her. She was practically a nobody. Disney owned the rights to that movie too! They can do some good things, but they don’t need a “famous” person to make this movie a big hit. All they need is good advertisements. They can make this movie great without it being a Twilight-sized EPIC FAILURE. Miley Cyrus can’t act, sing, or hold her own in the world. Wings is a really good book. It has a well developed plot, and also a pretty interesting love triangle that Twilight can only dream of. Personally, I don’t think Miley Cyrus should play Laurel. When I think of Laurel, she doesn’t resemble Miley at all. Miley is a brunette, Laurel is blonde. And usually, blonde fairies, have platinum or really light blonde hair. Do you guys really think Miley would look good with such light blonde hair? Sure she wears a blonde wig when doing Hannah Montana, but come on, it didn’t really look that good on her in the first place. I really believe that Miley should not play the part of Laurel. She is okay but she is not right for this part. I think Taylor Swift should definitly play this part though. She is great and it would be nice to see her take on a more serious role in a movie.
OH MY GOD. WHY MOST DISNEY RUIN THIS? MILEY CYRUS IS THE MOST MOCKED TEENIE POPPER OUT THERE, AND THEY’RE RUINING THIS BOOK SO SHE CAN GET SOME BUZZ?!?!?! Okay I saw on facebook that they were going to make a movie of this book . Then I saw that Miley Cyrus was going to play Laurel and I almost started like, crying . I’m completely disappointed that they would pick Miley to play Laurel . She in absolutely no way fits Laurel’s personality . Miley’s a terrible actress and a terrible singer . She would ruin the movie . I don’t really want to see this movie if Miley Cyrus is going to be playing Laurel. I mean, imagine her playing Laurel when her dad gets sick, or she gets thrown into the river . Exactly, it would be horrible if Miley Cyrus played Laurel . Absolutely disappointing and terrible .
I just finished ‘Wings’ and I have to admit: I fell in love with the beautiful story and the characters. It’s mesmerizing. (I’m always looking for good books) So I wanted to know when the next book ‘Spells’ will be published in Belgium (I prefer reading novels in my own language) and went searching on the internet. And so I found out that they would make a movie about this book with fcking Miley Cyrus?? I was appalled! You can already ruin a novel by turning it into a movie ’cause when you first read the book and then watch the movie, your imagination is just completely destroyed. But people, please, if you decide to make a movie about such a great book, pick someone else to play Laurel (I’m begging you on my knees!). I imagined Laurel as an innocent girl, very natural (I mean natural beauty, no make-up, a natural blonde), someone who’s inconspicuous but special at the same time. And that doesn’t sound like Cyrus AT ALL! Anyway, I’m never going to watch it if she’s in it. I’d rather die (:
I’m really disappointed with the choice of picking Miley. I mean, I’ve never been a Miley fan and she doesn’t suit the role of Laurel at all. I’ve been obsessed with this series (especially the second one; you wouldn’t believe how much I squealed =_____=) but, seriously? MILEY?

Um hello Miley is nice and all for like two years old but not at all good for laurel she hasn’t read the books and will probably get her “acting skills” by whoever you picked as the director,who will in turn botch the whole movie in a lot of ways. If you let one of us direct the movie it will turn into a blockbuster hit. I mean none of us have directing skills but we are going to be the one buying tickets and truthfully we decide if it’s going to be a hit or a miss. So if this many people agree that you have the wrong person well change. Duh it’s not that hard to figure out. Oh and Iris are you out of your mind all Robert pattison does is sparkle he isn’t going to be tam. Oh and taylor swift is a little to old and a bit to freakishly pretty.love her songs but I have never seen her act. Maybe you should cast a actual fan. We would know how to portray laurel better than anyone. Oh and maybe you could consult all of us to see what we want to see. Oh and if you don’t do any of that at least read the books before you re-cast, which you will do unless you want us to boycot the movie I mean I will not see a movie even if it is based off my fav book that casts someone I know is not correct. I will want the book to keep the Avalon series pure in my mind even if I will never see it in a movie theater. Oh please god no Miley Robert or Taylor. If you can Disney contact me. PLEASE RETHINK THIS FUTURE MISTAKE. I enjoyed the book very much and it was even cooler when the main character was going to the same highschool i went to and same town i’m living..even if i was overthinking the geography of certain streets and places..please do it justice and find a better actress
Truthfully, if this is how the movie is going to be, I would rather not even bother watching it. I would just enjoy the books. Number one, they could attempt to make the lead character look even a bit similar to the book decription. Number two, the producers who made the Twilight movies?? I actually liked the books until I saw what became of the movies. I’m just worried what could potentially happen to this book.
No offense to miley but but i don’t think that she would suit laurel, maybe someone else like katya or mara but definitely NOT laurel. Miley’s image lately isn’t all that innocent, sweet-lookin or shy looking lately if you haven’t noticed. Laurel would need an actress who can represent her perfectly and as she’s descraibed eg. innocent, misunderstood, strond, passionate, carund kind and others.. plus i think she should still stick to the blonde hair blus eyes thing instead of brown hair.

ok im sorry but im 16 and i loved this book. its for teenagers. and i the only reason i see you guys picking miley cyrus is because she has alot of fans…KID fans. 5 year olds wearing wigs. so if you actually want the teen age group to see this pick a better actress..because she dosent fit the discription of laurel and does drugs and drinks..she is not a good choice for this movie. it will bomb if you choose the pot head drunk.

I love this series! If Wings becomes a movie I will be sooo happy but, Miley is not a suitable option for playing Laurel, if anything Dakota Fanning should be considered while casting the role. I hope when they make Wings into a movie they see that the majority of the fan-base is not in approval to Miley Cyrus playing Laurel.
