After being rumored as being on the shortlist to direct Predators, the Robert Rodriguez produced reestablishment of the Predator franchise, AICN has apparently confirmed that Nimrod Antal has been given the job.
In the interview Rodriguez speaks on how much he admired the chops Antal showed with Kontroll and Armored.
We touched on the the Rodriquez involvement briefly before in April, but he’s given some (not so new) hints via the interview:
it still involves a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors (that are not always from outside their group). So like the original movie, the title does have a double meaning.
Aliens was a different take on the Alien idea, and an original movie in it’s own right, and that’s what we want to do with this.
Predator is just one of those franchises that I think people my age will give the eternal pass, and will continually wait for a great movie and forget the failures. I think Jeff VanderMeer said it best:
kind of nauseating boys-bonding dialogue.
Welcome to the core of ’80s SF geekdom! Rodriguez also notes:
Failure is not an option.

Sounds like the worst idea ever, being stuck on the Predator homeworld is a recipe for disaster. I guaranty this will be worse than both AVP movies. Antal has made some good movies, but Armored looks awful.
My thought is that it’s going to be done by somebody no matter what. I don’t think the AVP movies were as bad as some diehards seem to, but with the first thought in mind, I don’t mind that it’s in the hands of Rodriguez.
Besides a lot of other things I think where predator went wrong was that ti go too clean and shiny. The first movie was straight gutter with only one exception – the Alien Camo – and it worked.
I wouldn’t be scared if it were in Rodriquez’s hands, but its in Antal’s hands. I liked the original idea of an Afghanistan based Predator a lot better, when this idea first started getting kicked around. Predator 2 was da bomb, but every other effort has lacked originality and Bill Paxton.
