Three plot lines, three cities, two vampire clans, and one strange woman named Maryanne. All put together, make for a intoxicating second season of True Blood. I have broken the episode synopsis up by setting to allow for a review of each plot thread.
“Bon temps”
Tara’s birthday party is underway as Sam finds out that Daphne is a shape-shifter too. The next day, Maryanne continues to stir up trouble in Bon Temps after trying to move into Sookie’s house with Tara, who refuses her request. She then casts her spell upon the customers of Merlotte’s; their outbursts of anger make Tara feel isolated and alone. Tara, confused and upset, invites Maryanne to live at Sookie’s house with her, promising that Sookie will understand. At Merlotte’s, Sam gives Lafayette his job back and notices that his cook is not the same after his absence.
Sam and Tara are definitely playing with fire with their love interests, Eggs and Daphne, who both have a connection to Maryanne. It appears that Maryanne’s plans are coming to fruition, though what those plans are have yet to be revealed. This does make this thread a bit frustrating and it is not helped by the mystery surrounding Maryanne herself. I am concerned that this plot thread might not come together well and may be a sour point for the season. I will just have to wait and hope it does not. I am, however, glad Lafayette is back in the fold and relieved to see that he has not been killed off.
“Light of Day Institute” & “Dallas”
Jason and his fellow soldiers are put through an intensive training course in which Jason once again shines. That evening, Jason witnesses a fight between Steve and Sarah, and he is later given a “gift” by Sarah for all his hard work.
Meanwhile, Sookie confronts Barry and he tells her that if any of the Dallas vampires find out about his abilities, they will possibly kill him. Bill reprimands Jessica for ordering a young man off of the “vampire friendly” hotel menu. Jessica, upset with Bill’s lecture, calls Hoyt and the two share a conversation. It is discovered at a meeting with the Texas Vampires that Godric may be a prisoner of the Fellowship of the Sun. Sookie volunteers to infiltrate the camp to find him. Later, Sookie is devastated to learn that Barry has quit his job and Bill tries to comfort her. As they start to make love, a woman appears in the hallway outside their room. It is Bill’s maker, Lorena.
It is quite apparent after this episode that Sookie and Jason’s paths are going to cross. This will make for a very interesting plot twist and definitely either strengthen or weaken their brother/sister relationship. The flashbacks of Eric’s making by Godric were really nice and filled in some holes that have been looming since the season began. Finally, we come to the strange appearance of Bill’s maker Lorena, well all I can say at this point, is that things are going to get a bit more interesting in Texas.
Season two of True Blood has not disappointed thus far and I for one just can’t get enough….Is it Sunday yet?
