Most of us probably know that Kevin Smith was first attached to write and direct a Green Hornet film, though his involvement ended a few years ago. This film has had a lot of drama around it recently beyond just the casting for the character of Kato, a spot recently vacated by Stephen Chow. We no longer have to concern ourselves with that: Enter Jay Chou.
Stephen Chow was then set to direct and star as Kato with Seth Rogen writing and starring in the film. When it was announced that Chow would no longer direct the film late last year, people wondered about his participation in the film at all. A casting call for the role sealed the deal last month–and today we learned that Jay Chou has been cast for the role.
Sony twittered:
THE GREEN HORNET gets his Kato in Taiwanese Superstar Jay Chou.
The only movie I’ve ever seen of Chou’s is The Curse of the Golden Flower, and to be honest I wasn’t aware of who he was by name when I watched it (and I remember not being cray about it). He probably, however, is more famous worldwide than anybody I mentioned above as the Chou has sold tens of millions as a recording artist (as my cousin was quick to tell me!) Though Chow was definitely a draw, I’m very interested in the film due to Gondry’s involvement.
The way Hollywood has been lately, I’m just glad they didn’t cast a white dude. Chou is joining Seth Rogen, Nicolas Cage and (perhaps) Cameron Diaz, in a film set to be released in July 2010.
