Dexter has always managed to get himself out of tough situations. But he suddenly finds himself in unfamiliar territory – life in suburbia. Now a husband and father of three, Dexter struggles to balance his family’s needs with his ongoing duties as a blood spatter analyst for Miami Metro Homicide. The exhaustion is taking its toll, and as sleepless nights start to threaten his job performance, Dexter wonders if maybe he’s taken on more than he can handle. And he’ll need to stay sharp – the department is busier than ever, with two new murders on their hands. The detectives, Debra included, are surprised when Special Agent Frank Lundy returns to share his theories on the case. Lundy believes they’re dealing with a serial killer he’s been chasing for years, whom he’s dubbed “the Trinity Killer.” Meanwhile, Dexter’s Dark Passenger drives him to seek out a fresh victim. But with so much already on his plate, is Dexter up to the task?
Finally, Dexter is back! I have been waiting on these new episodes ever since the credits rolled at the end of season three. We rejoin America’s favorite serial killer for season four, as he combats ”newborn” sleep deprivation while trying to continue his double life, and it is quite fun to watch. One particular bit that had me laughing out loud was a homage to the opening cuts of the show, replayed with Dexter’s current situation in mind during the episode. Dexter pulls on a t-shirt, which symbolizes suffocation; the new version shows “baby” vomit on the shirt. Once tying his shoes hinted at strangulation; now his laces just break. This comical montage only further signifies the changes that have come to Dexter’s life, and they just might make it fall apart. This new life is quite the predicament not only for Dexter, but also for his viewers. I want Dexter to be happy, but I also want him to continue his journey with his Dark Passenger. It is his madness and how he controls it that makes Dexter most appealing, “Daddy” Dexter is a new twist and will take some getting used to for some viewers.
It was great to see Dexter’s great cast once again, including the reappearance of Keith Carardine and the new addition of John Lithgow. Lithgow’s character shall make for one thrilling season four. He is playing a real creepy killer, and just watching the scene of him in the buff, killing one of his victims in a bath tub, is enough to keep anyone awake at night with fear. I am very curious about this new monster on Dexter and how Lithgow will bring it to life.
I will say this about episode one of season four–it sure did not hold back. When I saw Dexter’s mini-van lose control and tumble off the road due to Dexter being a sleep-deprived-zombie, I jumped up and screamed: “What about the body in the van?” and “How is Dexter getting out of this one?”
Dexter for me is the show that never disappoints and keeps me on the edge of my seat waiting for something shocking to happen. I am so stoked about this new season and wish it was Sunday again already.
