Nice put on Dune, on a note Paul Muad'Dib walks out into the desert, returns to knock his own empire, then gets martyred! But thanks for remembering a true sci-fi classic!

Now where is a series like Space: Above and Beyond on that list? Arguably the best bit of sci fi to come out of the nineties.

Let's not also forget the Russian with Roadside Picnic. Nor the other works of Dick, Heinlein or any of the other authors.

Often underrated or completely unknown is WE by Yevgeny Zamyatin. It was written in 1921 and is heralded as the grandfather of all futuristic dystopian novels. Its quality of writing, depth of plot and believability far surpasses Nineteen Eighty-Four, Brave New World, The Chrysalids and any other book in this genre I've read to date.

No self-respecting Science Fiction fan should go without reading this work of art at least once in their lifetime :D

I grew up on science fiction with the ABC's, Asimov, Bradbury and Clarke. There is so much stuff out there that is mind blowing on the space bad-ass scale, but the Chronicles of Riddick has to be my favorite. Vin Diesel is excellent but the movie itself is seamless, very rare for sci-fi. I never get tired of watching that movie. Although my kids always want to watch the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, for a completely different reason!

You left out the Lensman series, the Pern series (which was starter sci-fi for most guys my age), and The Last Starfighter. Oh, and Hellboy. And many props for Honor Harrington, which is a masterpiece of space opera.

Princess of Mars was written in 1911, appeared as a serial titled "Under the Moons of Mars" in All-Story Magazine in 1912, and finally appeared in book form in 1917.

Just thought you'd want to know.

Gah, how did I leave out The Fifth Element? I was like in love with Milla Jovovich's red hair and borderline-pornographic space-tape for life after that movie!

Good call on Pitch Black as well; I should definitely have mentioned Riddick - he's one of the classic Sci-Fi anti-heroes, and Vin Diesel gets +1 to Awesomeness because he plays D&D when he's not crashing hot rods or stabbing people in the jugular.

I also have to (perhaps somewhat shamefully) admit that I'm not familiar with Gersen or DiGriz, but will definitely check them out.

If I had to mention one, I'd have to mention Riddick who kicked a lot of ass in Pitch Black.

I am not into name calling, but ...

I think the only people you have to worry about are Kirth Gersen and Jim DiGriz coming around to your place to kick your ass.
