I dream of a world, where I do not need an Iphone, but rather just an Ipod Touch to surf the internet anywhere and make free VOIP calls. Well McDonald’s is bringing us one step closer to that reality by announcing that it will offer free WiFi access at most of its United States locations beginning mid-January 2010.
“We’re not just about hamburgers,” Dave Grooms CIO of McDonald’s USA said. “We are about convenience and all kinds of value.”
I love the idea, but offering free WiFi does bring about some other issues. Do we want McDonald’s to be the town hang out? Is it like a Starbucks where you want people writing reports for a few hours while other people wait on a line to get a seat? The difference with McDonald’s is that sometimes you go there because you do not have a long time for lunch, and this could complicate that if there is not enough seating room. Still anytime a company offers something for free I commend them.
