Still new to a relationship, Howard feels threatened when Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) takes an interest in Leonard’s work. Meanwhile, in hopes of having more to talk about with Leonard, Penny asks Sheldon to teach her about Leonard’s work.
I was a little disappointed to see Howard feeling so possessive and insecure about Bernadette. I know he has a long way to go toward maturing, but he more or less covered the same ground this episode as last episode. In “The Vengeance Formulation,” we learned that, for all his posturing, Howard didn’t know about traditional third-date sex. This week, we learned he didn’t know how to remove a bra that clasped in the front. Later, talking with Leonard, he exaggerated how far he had gotten with Bernadette. I always knew Howard wasn’t as experienced as he claimed, but he’s even less experienced than I thought.
The love triangle Howard perceived featuring himself, Leonard, and Bernadette was well acted and funny, but as I said, not a step forward. Then again, if there had been another episode or two between “The Vengeance Formulation” and this one, it might not have seemed as repetitive.
By contrast, Penny’s becoming curious about Leonard’s work—asking Sheldon to teach her—was progress. She didn’t retain much, but the effort was there. I also enjoyed the dramatic moment of Penny becoming frustrated, calling herself stupid, and Sheldon trying—in his own way—to encourage her. He didn’t, but the effort was there. A scene like this would not have played as well earlier in the series.
One of Big Bang‘s successes is showing the characters becoming more understanding and comfortable with each other. Another example of this: Bernadette sat in Sheldon’s spot when she was invited for dinner, and Penny explained why Sheldon couldn’t sit anywhere else—almost quoting his explanation from an earlier episode—to which Sheldon replied, “There’s hope for you yet.”
In the end, Penny was able to expound about Leonard’s experiments, but only by restating Sheldon’s opinion from memory. I hope someday, as a result of being with Leonard, Penny is able to understand his work on her own terms, and to explain physics to someone else as she explained Sheldon’s spot to Bernadette. There’s hope for her yet.

I love the Bernadette character and I am really glad they introduced her to the show. I thought last nights show gave us some real insight into Howard as well and we find out a story that involves him can be interesting and funny. My favorite part, where his Mom comes home while Howard is making out with Bernadette.
I liked penny wanting to learn physics for leonard. And to want to surprise him. I only wish that she was able to learn more than just Sheldon’s opinion and thus inadvertantly insulting Leonard. I don’t think Penny wanted to do that at all.
I know she wanted to surprise him but now that they got this funny SP scenes out of the way I would like to see some funny LP scenes with her actually going to the lab with him to watch his experiment. We might get to see how smart Penny really is. Seems Leonard is the only one who give Penny any credit for being smart.
Bernadette is ok in small doses but i don’t think I’d like to see her too often and I got just as annoyed at her as Leonard did after she AGAIN explained to him what Howard meant .. Leonard knows what he means and so do we.
I didn’t know about 3rd date sex either, but that’s because it was on the first date that I lost my virginity with the girl
This week’s was hilarious…Sheldon was firing from all cylinders, and everybody got some good luahgs in.
I don’t add many comedies to my already-full pattern of viewing, but I can say without hesitation, Big Bang Theory is the funniest CBS comedy on Monday nights, and I became fully hooked this winter. Just when you think Sheldon can’t possibly get any funnier, he top himself. Kudos to the writers, but especially to Parsons for having to regurgitate dialogue that’s impossible to even comprehend.
