Kenneth Branagh just keeps adding to an already and ever increasingly interesting and diverse cast for his treatment of Marvel Comics’ God of Thunder, Thor. Unlike another film based on Marvel properties that we talked about today, Ghost Rider, Thor is an in-house Marvel Studios project, a happenstance that hasn’t delivered a truly bad film yet (Iron Man, the second Hulk, with Captain America and Avengers in the wings). According to THR, possibly the latest addition to the cast is academy award nominated Adriana Barraza.
The only detail given about Barraza’s possible role is that it would of a human, and not that of an Asgardian. Whatever her role, it’s much a a given she’s going to bring a solid performance. Her role in 2006′s Babel garnered her nods for the aforementioned Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a SAG, just to name a few. She was also in last year’s Sam Raimi film, Drag Me to Hell.
If cast, Barraza would join a line-up of actors that is a mix of relatively new faces like the actor playing the titular character, Chris Hemsworth, and his main protagonist, Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston. The two are joined by household names likeAnthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman, as well as very talented Stellan Skarsgard, The Wire’s (for Brian!)Idris Elba, the lovely Kat Dennings, Renne Russo (Thor ‘s Mom!), Jaimie Alexander and Colm Feore. Thor has a tentative release day of May 2011.
