Mysterious government agents bring remains to the Jeffersonian and forbid anyone (Brennan, Cam, Angela, Hodgins, Sweets) to leave until the team determines cause of death. Though they are also forbidden to take bone samples, the team’s observations lead them to believe these are the remains of President John F. Kennedy.
For roughly the past two seasons, I’ve noticed the quirky nature of many Bones episodes. While the show has always been watchable, part of me prefers more serious, important cases. There may be no mystery as enduring or fascinating to Americans as the Kennedy assassination, and the men in black led by the imposing Mr. White (Richard T. Jones) set a proper tone of menace. Mr. White and his men arrived just after Booth left the building. Part of the fun was watching Booth work to get back in.
Meanwhile, Cam found a positive pregnancy test she hoped belonged to Angela, but Angela denied it at first, causing Cam to fret that it belonged to her adopted daughter Michelle. Later, Angela admitted to Cam that it was her pregnancy test and began to think what she’d do about the baby. The show took this opportunity for heart-to-heart talks between Angela and Hodgins. Hodgins knew Angela would decide to keep the baby and would shoulder most of the burden instead of sharing it with the younger Wendell. Hodgins came out and said he loved Angela and offered to be there for her and the baby in whatever role she needed. This struck me as simple and sincere.
As the team deduced the victim’s skull showed impacts from two high-velocity rounds, they began to suggest that the U.S. government had covered up the details of JFK’s death. This didn’t sit well with the patriotic Booth, but in the end, he physically overpowered Mr. White and two other agents to give Brennan time to test the bones in pudding. With this test, she determined the remains were not JFK.
This is my new favorite episode of Bones: well written, action-packed, and a throwback to earlier seasons. I enjoyed seeing the show’s two main relationships tested–Hodgins stepping up for Angela in case she needed him, Brennan continuing to investigate for Booth’s sake despite her firm belief the remains were JFK, and Booth putting aside what he’d prefer to believe in order to help Brennan get the whole truth.
