Definitely love seeing news/progress regarding John Carter of Mars. Not only am I just generally a SF/F fan, but I’m also a pulp collector where the works of Burroughs would probably rank among the most sought after titles. Couple that with what seems to be a big push from Disney to find something to take the Pirates reins and we might actually be able to expect some real fun movies, starring Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins. Let’s be honest, adding former Dr. Tim Whatley (Seinfeld!) Bryan Cranston can never be bad thing.
Cranston will play character described by THR as a “Civil War colonel who comes into conflict with Carter”. Cranston has had several roles, both acting and voicework, but perhaps recently most memorable as the star of AMC’s Breaking Bad or to Malcom in the Middle fans. Cranston is just one of several already cast, as last September James Purefoy and Mark Strong were announced in and Thomas Haden Church was confirmed from an earlier post we made during the summer. before then the trio of Samantha Morton, Dominic West and Polly Walker were cast, as was Willem Dafoe.
This is director (and co-writer) Andrew Stanton’s first attempt at live-action, after previously bringing us Finding Nemo and WALL-E. He was also the executive producer of Monsters, Inc. and Ratatouille , so its probably safe to say he has the CGI part of this Live-action/CGI mix down. Listen as the other co-writer is Mark Andrews, but I’m wondering how much of what’s going forward was all-world writer’s Michael Chabon’s contributions–the news that got me pumped about the project in the first place. We should be on the lookout for John Carter of Mars in the Summer of 2012.
