Is Peter Sarsgaard Green Lantern’s Hector Hammond?

I dig it, just like I’m rather optimistic of last week’s casting of gossip girl Blake Lively. According to Heatvision, Peter Sarsgaard is in negotiations to assume, not the role of Sinestro (which is what I’m waiting for after the October non-rumor), but that of (Doctor) Hector Hammond. Looks like Ryan Reynold’s Hal Jordan won’t be lacking for villains in the Warner Bros film.

Peter Sarsgaard is – at the very least – a damn solid actor, and one that I like. He’s in a ton of different types of films, from Garden State to Empire, to Shattered Glass. Beyond that, anybody who was in the The Mysteries of Pittsburgh is extra official to me (go read the Chabon novel people). Hammond is an even more interesting choice if director Martin Campbell decides to go with the comic book Secret Origins, which ties Hammond to Carrol Ferris (who would be played by the aforementioned Blake Lively) in a very film-friendly conflict and establish possible precedent for Sinestro to be a dynamic character in the film (and I’d wager possible sequels). In the report, the character who goes back to the early Silver Age is described as the “pathologist son of a senator who is seen as a disappointment in his father’s eyes. He becomes infused with psychic powers when he discovers a meteor.”

Green Lantern is scheduled for a June 17, 2011 release, and is set to begin filming next month in New Orleans. I think Campbell is a real interesting pick by Warner Bros. that gives me hope that there’s going to be an edge to this film to really make it work (though I recognize this could get really ugly). This is DC’s best hope out of their other iconic characters to put something out there beyond Batman into the mainstream mix. If this cast goes through, it will be a good one.
