The LA Times ran an article on Runaways, the forthcoming biopic of the titular ’70s teenage all-girl band (who somehow ran a story on January 17th–I’m ahead of them by nine hours and it’s still the 16th here) that’s set to debut this year at Sundance. With the piece is an image from the film that I had not seen before among the various promotional packages and it features the two headliners of the film – both Twilight New Moon alumni – Kristen Stewart and Dakotta Fanning in their roles of Joan Jett and Cherie Currie respectively.
We’ve seen some of Runaways already via a clip and trailer released last month (also this poster). The duo of Stewart and Fanning are joined by Stella Maeve as Sandy West, Scout Taylor-Compton as Lita Ford, and Michael Shannon as Kim Fowley in the Floria Sigismondi film. Alia Shawkat will play a fictional character in the movies, the band’s bassist due to what’s being reported as legal complications with real life band member Jackie Fox. Though I called The Runaways a biopic, the article indicates that Sigismondi considers the film to be more “an impressionistic character study illuminating a unique female predicament.”
The Runaways begins another year of a lot of Kristen Stewart, in what looks ti be some rather interesting roles, and a departure from Twilight’s Bella. This year she will also be featured inThe Yellow Handkerchief, Welcome to the Rileys, and of course Twilight Eclipse, the third chapter of The Twilight Saga.. After its Sundance debut, The Runaways is set to be released in theaters on March 19th.
