We now have some more promo images featuring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning in The Runaways, the upcoming film based on the ’70s band set to debut this weekend. What marks this batch different from previous looks we’ve received is that this set features other cast/band members beyond the Twilight duo of Stewart and Fanning playing Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, and we get a glimpse of bandmates Robin, Lita Ford and Sandy West The Runaways is debuting this week at Sundance (on January 24th) and set for a wider U.S. release in March.
The rest of the band are portrayed by Alia Shawkat (as Robin), Scout Taylor-Compton (as Lita Ford) and Stella Maeve (as Sandy West). Also featured is the the Michael Shannon as Kim Fowley, the band’s manager and producer. Shawkat’s Robin is a fictional character, the group’s bassist, who is included in the film due to complications with real-life band member Jackie Fox. Previously, we’ve also posted a trailer, a clip, and the first one-sheet for film. It’s directed by Floria Sigismondi, and will tell the story of the band’s formation and rise to fame, though the director – as we noted before – told the LA Times that she consider Runaways to be more of a “an impressionistic character study illuminating a unique female predicament”, than a traditional biopic.
Synopsis: Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star in this music-fueled story of the ground-breaking, all girl, teenage rock band of the 1970s: The Runaways. The film follows two friends, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. Joan and Cherie fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley, played by Michael Shannon, who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself and so do its two leads: Joan is the band’s pure rock & roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten. Written and directed by Floria Sigismondi, the film chronicles Joan and Cherie’s tumultuous relationship on and off stage, as the band starts to break out.
