In a dynamic new portrayal of Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous characters, Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson embark on their latest challenge. Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes battles as never before to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country.
Directed by Guy Ritchie. With Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams. The legendary Sherlock Holmes get a reboot and a bit of attitude. I am a huge Sherlock Homes fan and loved The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes television series, which for many fans defined who Sherlock Holmes was. I had been awaiting this movie with great anticipation, and wasted no time in to getting to the theater to watch it once the film was released.
The film was visually dark but beautiful, and I am glad Ritchie did not try to make London all clean and posh. He truly brought forth the “grittiness” he is famous for in all his films, and did a great job overall in this new direction of a classic character. I thought that Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law’s chemistry as Sherlock Homes and Dr Watson was right on the mark. It was a real joy to watch them banter back and forth. I found Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of a darker, more manic Sherlock Holmes a bit foreign at first, but the moment he began his quirky Holmes “deductions,” I was hooked. The film was action-packed but also was the story of two best friends and the passion they shared for solving a mystery. I found myself on the edge of my seat quite often and laughing a bit here and there after hearing Downey’s quips as Holmes.
Hollywood has spent a bit of money reinventing old stories and hopefully bringing new life to them. Some have been great and others quite terrible; in fact I am sure a few authors are still turning in their graves over some celluloid flop. Sherlock Holmes offers us hope that sometimes Hollywood can get it right and make a film worth remembering and adding to the existing canon from which it was borrowed. I would also like to add that the actors in this film really brought it home; this film was carried on their exceptional skills, because the story is what you would expect a Sherlock Holmes mystery to be.
I really liked this film and would not mind a sequel; it was set up for one, as anyone would expect. This film had action and humor and mystery, and what more could a fanboy or fangirl wish for? The choice to see Sherlock Holmes should be “elementary, dear Watson,” so get out there and watch it!

I equally loved the film and have written about it at length. There was so much good in the film that the things that faltered (weak middle section) were helped along. As a fan of Jeremy Brett (who is *a* quintessential Holmes), I thoroughly enjoyed a more modern take on the movie. The little homages were a treat to long-time Holmesians. And Jude Law just broke the mold for Watson.
Okay, firts Scott’s review and now this. I’ll have to see it.
This movie was horrible, and had little to do with any of Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories. I don’t know why anyone thought Guy Ritchie was doing Sherlock Holmes justice with this movie, but clearly they don’t have a brain if they did. There is no subtlety or interesting ideas in this movie, and R. Downey Jr. and J. Law are unbelievable as the heroes. They have NO chemistry. Sherlock’s love interest in this movie (I’m not familiar with the actress) is totally unbelievable, and her acting is possibly the worst of the decade. Don’t see this movie if you’ve ever read any of the original stories, or if you even like previous Guy Ritchie films.
I agree with jim jones that this is not the good way to made a Hollywood Movie. Please if Director of the movie has to do the action, and humor to sell the movie or formula film so do it with his own characters not “The Famous Writers”.
The movie ws gr8 as a movie bt nt as a Sherlock holmes movie… The actors looked cool… bt seemed dumb compared to the actual holmes… still, enjoybale ‘n funny
Thoroughly annoying cinematic fare. Of course the movie gourmand
will be totally captivated by the incessant and incredibly cheesy gimmickry, however if you possess an ounce of intelligence you may actually ask the question why any of this was necessary to begin with. Nor does having a chap who is maybe 5′ 6″ and 150 lbs beating up just about every thug in London contribute much in the way of credibility to an already incredulous storyline. Don’t
expect anything appropriate or authentic vis-a-vis the Sherlock Holmes personna – the name is merely borrowed here, and seemingly an afterthought at that. But to his credit Downey deftly and consistently delivers the insipid dialog in insusceptible and invulnerable – yet barely interested (as you should be) – fashion.
i am in gr 8 and i ve been reading the book “adventures of sherlock holmes” in literature class and i really enjoyed it .last week we watched the movie. i was a little confused but the movie was AWESOME .i really enjoyed it as well as my classmates. i thought that it was very successful
Absolute rubbish- couldn;t understand a word Downey said- he should have lessons in opening his mouth when he speaks instead of mumbling. Why do most film directors of today tend to ignore audio quality altogether?
to geoff— thats why i got the movie in DVD, and watched the whole thing again…with subtitles, and i do agree with your opinion with Downey’s way of -blurry- talking.
I didn’t start reading the books till after I saw the movie and I’m hooked on these stories and surprised how much they really took straight out of the books. There are quotes straight from the dialogue of the stories in the movie and I never knew those scenes with Holmes plucking a violin all the time was an actual characteristic of Holmes in the books. lol. It was something I never saw in other Sherlock interpretations and was one of my fave things in the movie. I hope it gets “kids” like me in the millennial generation to pick up these books. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a brilliant writer =)
Oh and the movie is totally awesome!
oh cry me a river
who the hell cares if its not like the old ones its a great movie very entertaining and funny
and Downey talks fine do you guys need hearing aids or something
Thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The dialogue is, for the most part, what kept me hooked. Sherlock Holmes is, subtle, witty, well spoken, strait the point and all round just very funny.
Also, there is chemistry in this movie, just not enough to “cover your eyes”, or blush in awe.
I loved this movie. I know some people might think that its not close to the Holmes we used to know but come on. Robert Downey Jr. is one of the best actors around and does every part he plays above and beyond the criteria. And the action was an added bonus and made it vere interesting. Love this movie.
