Twilight fans finally have a piece of news about the movie adaptation of the saga’s final novel, Breaking Dawn. The LA Times is quoting one of the Twilight franchise producers as acknowledging that the script for the last book is currently being written (by Melissa Rosenberg, who has adapted all the other books). No word yet on whether it will be one film or two (as Stephenie Meyer speculated it might be soon after the book’s publication), but the producer did say that filming may begin as early as this fall. He added that “all three stars”–presumably meaning Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner–are on board to reprise their roles as vampire Edward Cullen and his human love, Bella Swan, and Bella’s werewolf friend and would-be boyfriend Jacob Black.
So…this is…not that unexpected. As much as I was kind of hoping the movies would end with Eclipse, as in my opinion the books should have done, I didn’t really expect Summit to forego the bazillion dollars they will make on this movie. I am actually more surprised that all the stars would agree to come back. Have they read the last book?
I also wonder why anyone feels two movies might be necessary. Just because the book is 800 pages long doesn’t mean it has 800 pages worth of stuff happening. I would rather see one long film and just be done with all of it. The producer claimed the decision would be based on how “organic” the splitting felt…is that code for “depends on how much money Eclipse makes so we can decide if the fervor will still be strong enough in 2011 for two installments”?
I am very curious to see how the film will handle some of the more horrific aspects of Breaking Dawn–and by that I mean the ones that make it verge into campy horror gore-fest territory, such as (SPOILER) Edward chewing through Bella’s uterus to extract the mutant baby, or Kristen Stewart looking haggard and methed-out as an expectant mother drinking blood milkshakes. The speculation on how they will handle said baby is also…interesting. (END SPOILER) If they do decide to go full CG with it, I hope they expand the budget more than they did for the werewolves in New Moon. Then again, this is not exactly a movie aimed at the truly discerning film critic, is it? It’s for the die-hard fans who loved the book and will love the craziness that it was just as much on the big screen…and for those who just can’t look away.
Count me as the latter, I suppose, but–and here’s why Summit is no doubt going ahead with the project–I’ll be seeing it anyway.

Edward does NOT chew through Bella’s uterus..given, there are other details that are not wonderful to imagine…but still, chewing through the uterus?? Eww, sicko!
My first First!!!! yayayayay!
DUDE…Have you read the last book??
its the best one!!
@blawrence – he removes renesmee via c-section, where he used his TEETH to bite through the vampire-skin placental sack. perhaps i should have said chews through TO her uterus? same thing in my book — a world of no.
@bonnii – yes, i did read the last book. difference of opinion, i know a lot of people liked it…but a lot of people didn’t, and i was one of those. i thought it was a complete 180 from the rest of the books in tone, feel, and, er, any sort of enjoyability. the baby was crazy wack with NO foreshadowing WHATSOEVER in the first three books (big no no if she planned it all along), and the rest of it was just long-winded. if it had been 500 pages i might hated it less. as it was, it was boring. and crazy. and boring. but, again, i know a lot of people loved it for what i didn’t love about it, so it’s just a difference of opinion.
It would be difficult for an actress to play Renesmee BUT they need one, simply to bond with Rob and Kristen. If Renesmee’s a full CGI then what the hell is Kristen gonna be holding half the time and talking to and bonding with. She needs a little girl to play Renesmee, or a series of little girls at the different stages of Renesmees life but enhanced with CGI. Not a CGI creation.
By this fall ?? Thats really fast… hope they make their deadline.
I really hope Renesmee at Play by the right child. I mean, as illustrated in Breaking Dawn. But I think it is very difficult to get a kid who really identical with Edwar and Bella. And how about the scene of the birth of Renesmee? I think it is very difficult to imagine the scene at feasible.
I think there is alot they could leave out. Stephenie Meyers objective for the 4th book was to close the series with what fans wanted from it. I think the wedding, baby and happily ever after is obviously what most readers would want to bring the series to a close. They should make this movie very carefully, obviously the fight for renesmee with the volturi will be the most action. I’m sure they’ll skip the gorry details and jump to the important parts keeping it simple. Bella and Edward getting married, Bella getting pregnant, drinking blood to grow the baby, giving birth and turning vampire, jacob imprinting, then the fight for renesmee…the end!
