Action Comics #1 – First Superman – Flies to $1 Million

Or as any true fan would say instead, “jumps”. I talked about this comic coming for sale over at my blog last week, and looks like (if everything can be believed) that I was completely wrong, and never have I been so happy to be corrected! While I didn’t think the hobby – in current market conditions – had a 7-figure book in it that wasn’t the best copy of this issue, I have always thought that Action#1 was rather affordable (relatively) when compared to the top keys of other collectibles.

ComicConnect (which is the auction house branch of Metropolis Comics) has sold the Kansas City copy (Pedigree) of Action Comics#1 for reported $1 Million Dollars

When I first heard this, my initial thought was that it had to be a cash and trade deal (perhaps for a lesser copy of the same issue in the deal), but over at the CGC boards (which is where I go to get my info and continuing education about comics) when Fishler (one of the principals at Metropolis) was asked if that was indeed the case, he said: “It is a cash sale.”

I mentioned that this copy is not the best copy known to exist. That honor would have to go to the Mile High (or Edgar Church) copy which is in the hands of Dave Anderson (aka the Dentist, who also owns the Allentown copy of Detective Comics#27 – the first Batman – the best known to exist of that issue as well). In a joyous occasion for comic books across the board (getting some good mainstream attention today), he may be happier than anyone else over this sale.

If nothing else, I hope that people who hear this news, who perhaps haven’t picked up a comic in a long time may decide that on their way home to stop at a newsstand or convenience store…oh, I forgot nevermind. You could make a weekend excursion and try to find a comic, I guess.

Still, awesome and exciting news for comic fans!
