God of War III for PS3, size of the game

You have seen the lastest trailer, and you have heard about the Mature ESRB tag, but now you get to hear about the size of the game. Yes along with measuring your demo downloads, we now get a chance to talk about the size of a game.

Director of Technology from Sony Santa Monica(Tim Moss) tweeted that God of War III will be 35GB large. Tim also goes on to say “Thank heavens for Dual Layer Blu-Rays.” Those Dual Layer Blu-Rays are 50GB large, in case you were wondering. We all know that a bigger game does not make a better game, but damn 35GB is large.

Size can just be because of pre-rendered video and audio and extras, but in comparison to the DVD size that the Xbox 360 uses that is huge. Me personally, I like my cut scenes pre-rendered so back off, Ill take the extra GB and be happy.

It’s worth mentioning here that just because there’s 35GB of data on the disc doesn’t necessarily mean there’s 35GB of UNIQUE data. It’s a known fact that Blu-Ray lasers read data much slower than standard CD/DVD-ROM lasers (red light), and have slower seek times. In an attempt to mitigate this issue, developers end up “duping” (duplicating) data across the disc to reduce seek time of common data, such as textures and AI and such. Sure, this game is probably rife with pre-rendered, hi-res movies all in native 1080p, making things quite large, but don’t forget to consider duping.
