In comics I always talk about the Big Five and DC War, but now the new slogan may need to be Spielberg/Hanks/HBO War (though that’s a bit long). This time they take us to the other front, The Pacific, which chronicles the stories of Robert Leckie (James Badge Dale), Eugene B. Sledge (Joseph Mazzello), and John ‘Manila’ Basilone (Jon Seda) in a 10-part HBO series starting on March 14th! We got another look and featurette in January and this look in September, but this one really gives us a closer look at what we can expect from the three characters themselves (and not just the backdrop).
Sledge and Lecki wrote books chronicling their experiences in the war, called With the Old Breed and Helmet For My Pillow. Who didn’t like Band of Brothers? My only beef is that I’m going to have to wait until The Pacific is on DVD, because to put it in perspective, Band of Brothers just aired here–come on HBO, let’s make some quality deals with the Armed Forces Network (AFN), support the troops! You know what’s on primetime now here? The Young and the Damn Restless.
Synopsis - “The Pacific” tracks the intertwined odysseys of three U.S. Marines – Robert Leckie, Eugene Sledge and John Basilone – across the vast canvas of the Pacific. The extraordinary experiences of these men and their fellow Marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the haunted jungles of Guadalcanal, through the impenetrable rain forests of Cape Gloucester, across the blasted coral strongholds of Peleliu, up the black sand terraces of Iwo Jima, through the killing fields of Okinawa, to the triumphant, yet uneasy, return home after V-J Day.
