First Katy Perry, now Sofia Vergara in Smurfs: The Movie!

Or as my (or, not so) grown-up self would call it, quality casting, even if we only get the former’s voice. THR is reporting that Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara is set to be a “live’ member of the cast of The Smurfs. At the beginning of the month we told you that Katy Perry was in talks to voice Smurfette – which now looks to be a done deal – and now from Heatvision, we appropriately get a report alerting us to even more heat joining the cast of the Smurfs movie.

Details of Vergara’s role of “Odie” were also revealed: “a powerful executive at a high-end French cosmetics company who is married to the live-action character played by Neil Patrick Harris“. This is causing some confusion on the internet because previously a very similar sounding role was attached to Jayma Mays (from Glee). The THR report indicates that Mays is still part of the film, so we’ll report any instances of clarity when we hear it. Vergara, Perry, Mays and Harris are also joined by Jonathan Winters (classic!) as Papa Smurf, George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf, Alan Cumming as Gutsy Smurf, and Hank Azaria playing (a live-action) Gargamel–in my opinion one of the classic villains ever!

The Smurfs is set for an August 2011 release, with Raja Gosnell directing the CGI/Live-Action adaptation of the classic cartoon, which itself is based on the work by Peyo.
