Bug Squashed, PlayStation 3 Owners Back in Business

Earlier today, we reported that an internal clock bug to non-Slim PS3 models caused major issues worldwide for users. The nightmare is finally over. Lost Trophies are being re-synced to accounts, games with Trophies are playable again, and PSN isn’t throwing error codes anymore.

This bug brought numerous PS3s to their knees for about 24 hours, one of the largest worldwide bugs in console history.

But the bug has been squashed…PS3 owners rejoice. At least it’s not the RRoD!

And this is why I woke up to my brother screaming, cursing and in all ways demanding I fix his PS3 this morning…god I hope he doesn’t lose too much, the amount of effort he puts into winning trophies is obscene and I can’t deal with the headache if he loses any.

PS3 Error: 8001050F is caused by clock bug. A fix from Sony is coming within 24 hours, but PS3 “Fat” owners are being told to keep their machines off for 24 hours. More to come.

Bug has been fixed! PS3 owners celebrate! EA, you can breathe, relax…Bad Company 2 won’t be marked by a large set of users unable to play your excellent game. You’ll find me online tomorrow playing BC2, for sure.

From what I read on it, I don’t think Sony actually did anything to really fix it.

It seems that for some reason the “fat” PS3′s had 2010 as a leap year. When March 1 came around the system thought it should be Feb. 29, the system checksums scratched their head and threw out a “WTF?”. It’s now properly March according to the system clock, so everything went back to normal.

It’s really odd that a problem like that would crop up, setting up what year is and is not a leap year isn’t that monumental a task lol.

Correct. Nothing appears to have been done. No patch or firmware update was released, so it definitely resolved itself because of the date.

Also, last night, when I turned my PS3 back on, the date still read 2/28 and the time was about 8 minutes too fast. I went into the Date/Time Settings and forced an update via Internet, and it reverted to 3/1/2010 and the time synced back to where it should’ve been.

Overall, definitely a clock bug because of leap year. Looks like I’ll be getting a new PS3 “slim” soon. Need one for upstairs anyway.

I don’t really care who did it, what’s important is it’s finally back up and running now. Rejoice! I have to admit though that I got so freaking worried about this bug for I have lost my saved games, I hope that I can still retrieve them.

Save data shouldn’t be affected, just Trophies earned during the fritz. You may have to go back and re-earn some Trophies, since that’s the only data that has been reported to get corrupted.
