Earlier in the week we got our first trailer of Predators, the Robert Rodriguez-produced next chapter of the Predator franchise. I thought the trailer relieved some of my trepidations about the movie, in particular the choice of casting Brody, who although I think is a terrific actor, isn’t the first person who enters my mind when I think about casting for a film like this. That said, the last couple of Predator films weren’t exactly the shots of testosterone that the original – that I’ll call it a classic – was. The clip/featurette seems to be aware of the talk in some corners, but isn’t incredibly revealing in itself even though Robert Rodriguez is talking up Brody’s character “Royce”. Doesn’t matter. You throw Predator(s) at me, I feel obligated to mention it. They just don’t make films like the original anymore, though I think Pitch Black has a similar unapologetic kick ass tone. SF in all forms needs to get back to that.
Starring with Brody is Alice Braga, and they are joined by Topher Grace, Danny Trejo, and Laurence Fishburne. The film hits theaters this Summer on July 7th and is directed by Nimrod Antal.
Film Synopsis - A bold new chapter in the Predator universe, Predators was shot on location under Rodriguez’s creative auspices at the filmmaker’s Austin-based Troublemaker Studios, and is directed by Nimród Antal. The film stars Adrien Brody as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize they’ve been brought together on an alien planet… as prey. With the exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers – mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members – human “predators” that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators.
