A Nightmare on Elm Street topped the weekend’s box office receipts by earning $32 million, knocking the animated fantasy How to Train Your Dragon out of the skies and into second place. The monstrous Freddy Krueger is no stranger to the silver screen. Though Wes Craven wrote and directed the original Nightmare in 1984, it was followed by A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s revenge, 3: Dream Warriors, 4: The Dream Master, 5: The Dream Child, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and Freddy vs Jason.
Perhaps the best reason to check out the new Nightmare, is actor Jackie Earle Haley. His gruff voice, which featured prominently in the big screen version of Watchmen, made him the ideal candidate to portray the fan favorite Rorschach, a haunted vigilante. Haley seems tailor-made for spooky roles. His cameo in this year’s thriller Shutter Island, was riveting if not brief. Fans can especially enjoy the former child star’s come back in Hollywood by viewing the television action drama Human Target. In the Fox show, based on a comic book, Haley really delivers as the sly Guerrero, a formidable assassin full of witty on-liners that usually begin with the word “Dude.”
2010′s foray into the fear-scape also stars Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles star Thomas Dekker and Twilight‘s resident beefcake, Kellan Lutz.
