After a two-week hiatus, Happy Town returned to ABC last night, and return they did with a bang. In the fourth episode of this series-that-will-never-be, the plot advances…and thickens. Sheriff Conroy’s wife is abducted by the Magic Man only to be returned a day or so later, without a hair harmed or anything of help to say. Henley finds out that her mystery lover from episode 3 is actually Greggy Stiviletto who just got out of prison. PS: She doesn’t care because he makes her waffles and has a great smile. In his defense he did give back her hammer. And Merritt Grieves, the eccentric bachelor who owns the misplaced Hollywood memoribilia shop, gets called in for questioning on Rachel Conroy’s disappearance. Meanwhile Detective Hobbs is starting to suspect, Tommy because he finds muddy shovels in the back of Tommy’s police SUV!
I don’t mean to be blase about any of this; it was all very exciting, and I like all the added layers of possibility that were introduced. It was nice to see Tommy’s vulnerable side as he shared a private moment with his father in the hospital, seeking advice. I was happy to see Rachel return, if only because I couldn’t bear the thought of Amy Acker leaving the show after only 3 episodes. I’m not sure yet how her abduction is going to fit in to all of this, and I’m afraid I won’t get to find out! Oh, and this hammer! I want to know what is up with this hammer! I think maybe we got a big clue in the last scene of this episode, but I’m still not sure what the heck is going on. I hope that gets resolved, too!
I do have two minor complaints. First, the muddy shovels in the back of the police truck. Really, Tommy? I didn’t picture him as that stupid! I think that’s going to be the key to his unraveling. Again, if it even has a chance to come up again. Second, it never occured to me that Merritt Grieves was supposed to be creepy and therefore susceptible to suspicion for any Magic Man-related crime. Whether this is a sub-conscious fondness for the Jurassic Park guy or just bad character development, I’ll never know. Luckily he and Tommy are now allied against the Magic Man, so I shouldn’t have to try and make him a bad guy again.
Despite my petty complaints, I think this was the best episode yet. It introduced new details relative to the story while letting the story progress. It wasn’t all talk talk talk; there was some real action. And most of it was scary good! I left out some of the best parts, so if you haven’t watched it yet, you can watch it online for free. I suggest you do so!

I thought the advertisements for Happy Town were ‘cheesey.’ But, I was pleasantly surprised. I became hooked after the 1st episode. Needless to say, I was terribly disappointed when it didn’t air for a few weeks… only to hear it was cancelled. I was totally unaware that a new episode was on this past Wednesday (as I’m sure many people where; hence the low viewer ratings.) But, I did watch it OnDemand today. It is the only show I am interested in watching since the finale of “Lost.” I wish it was here to stay!!!
I actually stumbled across Happy Town on the internet. I think having not seen any promos or previews cos I live in Australia (it’s completely unheard of here), I didn’t expect much. I gotta say that the plot itself seems a bit lame, but I actually really enjoyed all the episodes so far. Ep 4 was definitely the stand out so far. I thought it was a great performance by Geoff Stults as well. Really disappointed that it’s been cancelled, so I’m hoping we get a lot of answers in the finale, unlike FlashForward.
I think this show is great. I was disappointed to hear it got cancelled. It’s pretty suspenseful to me because there are so many unanswered questions. I think the previews didn’t do the show justice thats why it has low ratings. The previews had nothing to do with the actual show. I wish it was being cancelled.
PS. I think its your subconcious fondness for the Jurassic Park guy cause I was curious about him from the first episode and the strange looks he would Henley.
