iGuGu Gamecore Wireless Controller for PC – E3 2010 Spotlight

GAMECORE-igugu

E3 2010 wasn’t just about console gaming. Vendors for PCs proliferated the show floor, including iGuGu (pronounced “eye-goo-goo”). When I made the appointment with the beautiful Ms. Kristin Proctor, I didn’t have a handle on exactly what this new wireless controller was all about. I’m glad I stopped by the iGuGu Gamecore booth because I was treated to a new way to play PC games.

There is an embedded video below straight from the iGuGu press kit that explains exactly what the Gamecore is, how it functions, and why it’s important to PC gamers. But I wanted to show off some of the features myself since I’m not a lazy reporter, and since I’m excited to talk about this piece of technology!

The iGuGu Gamecore controller

The Gamecore is a compact wireless 2.4GHz controller that incorporates a joystick, trackball, direction pad, a full QWERTY keyboard, programmable action buttons, and…get this…six accelerometers. What are those? Motion controls, baby! Not only is this the most robust and feature-filled controller for the PC ever made, it’s built to handle the latest wave of motion-enabled games, plus support the more than 27,000 available PC titles.

So what’s so special about this controller? Think about the single biggest limitation PC gamers have. Take a look around you right now. Are you in a comfortable couch? Do you have a 50+ inch…heck, a 36+ inch HD television in front of you as you play World of Warcraft? The answer, most likely, is no. You’re stuck with, at best, a 24″ widescreen monitor and an office chair that makes your butt cheeks go numb after about 30 minutes of solid gameplay. The Gamecore changes all this by allowing players to connect their PCs (laptops included, of course…anything that runs your PC games) to their TVs and play their games! It’s not a gimmick, it works, I demo’d the product and all of the games were running off of laptops connected to HD LCD TVs, and iGuGu even had some new 3D TVs running Grid, a racing game, sporting the six-axis motion controls.

So imagine, if you will, sitting on your couch or in your awesome arm chair, playing World of Warcraft on your 52″ HD TV, with a better level of control for ALL your games than a simple keyboard and mouse. With the trackball at your disposal, first-person-shooter fans even have to take pause and wonder if the Gamecore wouldn’t be better than the keyboard and mouse for precise aiming. Oh, they had that covered at the iGuGu booth: a gamer was there demo’ing the Gamecore running with Call of Duty: World at War, and he owned. Takes some getting used to, for sure, but the benefit is that the game was running on a 40″ LCD TV and looked great! You big video card junkies? If you can sport insanely high resolutions, this will allow you to show them off on a REAL monitor…your massive TV.

Fits comfortably in your hands...trust me, it does.

The jury is still out on whether or not this device is the true end to the keyboard and mouse for PC gamers, but once I get my grubby hands on one and test it out on my 46″ LCD and my Windows 7 64-bit gaming rig, I will be sure to post up a full review right here at BSCreview.com. In the meantime, enjoy the following video courtesy of iGuGu.
