
The July 4th weekend was sensational for Twilight Saga: Eclipse and The Last Airbender, but the debut of the animated feature, Despicable Me reigned supreme this time around. It took in $60.1 million, which eclipsed the third Twilight film because the viewership for Team Edward and Team Jacob dropped some 49% on this, its second week out. Check out the Eclipse review. Despicable Me proved the bell of the box office ball, however, far surpassing expected receipts . According to the LA Times, “It was the biggest-ever opening for an original animated movie not made by Pixar or DreamWorks Animation, putting Universal’s Illumination Entertainment family films unit among the top players in its space.”
Despicable‘s success is all the more surprising because animated competitor Toy Story 3 is still a film to which folks are flocking.
