Deadline reports that Guillermo Del Toro and James Cameron will be teaming up for a definitive take on At the Mountains of Madness, the classic H.P. Lovecraft novella about the dark origins of mankind. Following a grisly revelation on an Antarctic expedition, it becomes apparent that modern man evolved from a horrid race of creatures that bring Hell with them upon their awakening.
No stars have been attached to the project just yet, but with Cameron’s support in the producer’s chair, Del Toro is sure to turn in a masterpiece. Lovecraft has never really gotten his due on the big screen. Low-budget directors like Stuart Gordon have turned in some loosely based horror films of poor to marginal quality, but a studio has never really dropped big money on one of his stories like this, and I, for one, am excited to see what a guy with the imagination of Del Toro can do with it. After efforts such as Pan’s Labyrinth, it’s truly amazing this is just now happening. However long it takes, I’m game.

For me this is one of the most exciting projects going. You’re absolutely right, Lovecraft has been strangely overlooked when it comes to serious film projects. Perhaps understandable from the mainstream point of view, as Del Toro has pointed out – no love interest for e.g. But still surprised no auteur film maker has grabbed it yet. This should be a thrilling collaboration.
Porn stars get paid way better and are safer as far as being out on the streets and getting hassled….But yes, I agree they are getting paid to do the same job pretty much.
