Matthew Cheney’s read and react of the Sandman run by Neil Gaiman continues over at Gestalt Mash, following up his first entry from last week covering ‘Sleep of the Just’. This issue is title ‘Imperfect Hosts’, and is illustrated by Sam Kieth (a personal favorite artist of mine). Here is a tidbit:
Silent movies separated the image and the words, with title frames falling between visual scenes. Comics make them simultaneous. Speech and thought bubbles are visual artifacts, but they are more than that, too, because our brains translate them into an approximation of an aural experience.
Check out G-Mash for the rest as Matt continues to run through one of he most acclaimed comic runs of all times! To this day, this is my favorite work from Gaiman, who of course has had no rest collecting honors and accolades from all mediums ever since.
