Aronofsky Closer to Wolverine 2

Director Darren Aronofsky has a name you’ll want to remember. His projects include The Fountain, The Wrestler and The Black Swan (see the trailer now). He made news recently when BSC discovered he was in the running to direct a Chris Nolan production of Superman: The Man of Steel. That’s right, folks, there will soon be a new Superman film on the big screen. The task of directing the picture finally went to Zack Snyder, but Hollywood had other projects worthy of Aronofsky waiting in line. Two of those projects were Wolverine 2 and Gangster Squad.

Today we learned from Deadline.com that one of those two films were crossed off the director’s list. That one was Gangster Squad. Does that mean Ben Affleck will helm that one? Nope. The Latino Review reports the shortlist of directors who will be offered Gangster Squad next include: Francis Lawrence, Paul Greengrass, Scott Cooper, Greg Berlanti and Martin Campbell.

But that’s not the big news, now is it? With the 1940s crime drama off the table, Aronofsky can hone in on Wolverine 2, the sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine and a reunion with actor Hugh Jackman if Aronofsky signs the dotted line to direct the comic book adaptation. Deadline said “Fox hasn’t closed a deal yet with the filmmaker’s CAA reps, but clearly Fox sees the filmmaker as ready to make that leap from modest grossing prestige fare like The Wrestler to the high gross stratosphere, the kind of leap made by filmmakers like Bryan Singer and Chris Nolan.” Do you like Aronofsky for the Marvel sequel?
