Wolverine 2 – Darren Aronofsky?
Here at BSC we’ve been front row and center to witness the exciting super hero domino effect taking place in Hollywood. It was down to the wire as media speculation grew that Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain, The Wrestler) was a contender for becoming Chris Nolan’s director in The Man of Steel, an upcoming Superman sequel. Well, Nolan instead named Zack Snyder to direct the picture, which could see actress Natalie Portman as the new Lois Lane.
Don’t shed any tears for Aronofsky. It appears he has some nice consolation prizes awaiting him. NY Mag.com, “has just learned that 20th Century Fox today entered into negotiations with Darren Aronofsky to helm the sequel to last year’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine (read a review of that film).”
Wolverine is one of my favorite Marvel characters of all time. I hated his first film, however, despite the fantastic casting of Hugh Jackman in the title role, reprising his role from Bryan Singer’s X-Men and X2 and Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand. Still, the right writer (an director) could probably make Wolvy 2 into a blockbuster. If Aronofsky signs the dotted line, it appears he’ll be re-joined with Jackman, who starred in his weird fantasy, The Fountain.
Aronofsky is also “still being offered” the “high-priority project” Tales From the Gangster Squad “a script about the Los Angeles Police Department’s off-the-books squad of mercenary cops who tried to chase infamous gangster Micky Cohen out of town in the forties”. That sounds a little like the plot of the wonderful L.A. Confidential, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t love to revisit the subject matter. The Town director, Ben Afflec has also been extended a chance at directing the script. Looks like another great Hollywood contest to me!
