Carey Mulligan is Daisy in The Great Gatsby

Carey Mulligan received a very special phone call from director Baz Luhrmann on Tuesday, but she wasn’t answering to her own name. “Hello, Daisy Buchanan,” the director said as she answered her cell. Mulligan burst into tears immediately. As a late entry in the fight to star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby, the 25-year old’s Nov. 2 audition left quite an impression. Luhrmann told Deadline of his decision shortly after showing the executives at Sony her screen test.
Also starring in the film will be Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, who also narrates the events of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic tale. In the previous film version starring Robert Redford as Gatsby, Daisy was played by Mia Farrow. Mulligan may not have that kind of experience, but she’s learning fast with an Oscar nomination already under her belt for a dynamite performance in An Education. How do you feel about Luhrmann’s decision?
