Ghibli Adapts Kokuriko-Zaka Kara

Got some big news for the manga and anime fans out there. Anime News Network reports that Goro Miyazaki with Studio Ghibli is working on an anime adaptation of Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsurō Sayama’s Kokuriko-Zaka Kara that will open in Japan next summer.

The story follows the coming of age of a high-school girl named Komatsuzaki in 1963 (or Showa 38). Her father, a sailor, is missing and her mothers photography work is constantly taking her abroad so Komatsuzaki spends a lot of time with two male friends, a school newspaper member and the student council president.

The manga story ran in 1980 in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi shōjo magazine. Studio Ghibli re-issued the story in July 2010 with a new wraparound jacket band that says “Hayao Miyazaki recommends this!”

Goro Miyazaki’s father (and Ghibli co-founder), Hayao Miyazaki, is planning the film and co-writing the script with Keiko Niwa. Satoshi Takebe is composing the music. Aoi Teshima, who starred as Theru in Tales from Earthsea in addition to doing the theme song for the film, will perform the theme song for Kokuriko-Zaka Kara.

The film will be produced by Toshio Suzuki, the former president of Ghibli.
