Rift: Planes of Telara Gunning for World of Warcraft?

The Rift is coming. The MMORPG video game, titled Rift: Planes of Telara is in the beta testing phase, just as we reported over at our sister site, BSCKids. Could the Trion Worlds project replace the hugely popular World of Warcraft? It looks like we will have to wait and see. But to gain the inside track, hop on over to the interview where David Reid, head of marketing at Trion Worlds in Redwood City, California (and former marketing chief for Microsoft’s Xbox 360), speculates on the possibilities.
The project website is very impressive. It promises “Four new Souls” available for the playing when the game is ready to launch. “Riftblades enchant their weapons, Necromancers raise the dead, Marksmen neutralize their targets, and Wardens soothe the wounded.”
Great graphics abound in the experience, which is “close” to a release date. “We feel like we are very close to release-level quality. We are tuning. We are polishing. We are scaling,” says Reid.
Here is an official game description from the website:
Join legions of adventurers in RIFT™, a new fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set in a world being torn apart.
Rifts violently rip into reality across the land and release powerful forces that threaten the very existence of Telara. Each breach brings with it new characters, events, and treasures, while the world itself changes dynamically around you.
Play with your friends across vast, lavishly detailed environments, or go head-to-head in challenging Player versus Player (PvP) combat as you battle to uncover the secrets of the planes. Build and advance your character using an innovative new class system with limitless possibilities.
The rifts have divided the people and endanger the world. Whether you fight to seal the rifts forever, or harness their power for your own, epic adventures lie ahead for those willing to fight for the future of Telara.
