Stephen Sommers Off G.I. Joe 2?
Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, The Mummy Returns) made the lame G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra a hit (How? I honestly don’t know) and he was expected to work that kind of magic again with the sequel, but the Los Angeles Times is reporting that Sommers won’t be at the helm of another G.I. Joe adventure after all.
There’s no official word from Paramount but two agents who represent other filmmakers say they’ve been contacted about their clients taking on directing duties and were told that Sommers wouldn’t be on-board for this one.
Nobody seems to know at the moment why Sommers bailed on the project. He’s lined up to work on a Tarzan reboot but it’s not ready to shoot so scheduling shouldn’t be a problem.
G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra is one of those movies that made it to my ‘please don’t let there be a sequel’ list, but Hollywood made a ton of money from the 2009 movie so I guess another one was inevitable. Hollywood doesn’t stop milking the cash cow until it’s way past dead.
Were you one of the unlucky ones who got suckered into watching it? If not, then you really should check out Eli’s review. it provides insights and laughs all at the same time. Read it whenever you get the urge to rent the movie. The desire will surely pass.
