Global Game Jam Winners

The Global Game Jam is over and winners are announed. It seems our resident artist (in case you didn’t know) Liezl Buenaventura and her programming partner Josh Liao have created an awesome game that was voted to 1st place in the Philippines. It has mutant bunnies in it, so it must be good. All joking aside, I played and thought it was awesome and then I remember they make it in 48 hours and I have to say I’m really impressed. It also pays homage to 90′s adventure games so go download it.
The Global Game Jam (GGJ) is the world’s largest game jam event occurring annually in late January. GGJ brings together thousands of game enthusiasts participating through many local jams around the world. GGJ is a project of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA).
I figure that Liezl would be better able to showcase their awesomeness so check it out below and make sure to go check out their game. I know that I could not build anything in 48 hours, let alone a video game.
The global game jam is a worldwide event that happens once a year, simultaneously across over 40 countries. We joined the one in Manila, Philippines. The purpose is for a programmers, artists, and game designers to get together and make a fully functional game (any kind you please) within 48 hours. Teams range from solo to 6 people. Josh and I decided to form a duo– he’s a programmer and I’m an artist.
At the end of he 48 hours, you upload your game to the jam site, you go around the venue (in our case the IT center at a local university) playing other people’s games, and then judges from professional game companies judge your work. We got 1st place from the jury, but there was also Speck who came in a runner up as well as Audience Favourite.

Liezl Buenaventura- artist, game designer
Lizz is a graduate of the UP College of Fine Arts (BFA- Visual Communication: Advertising, CFA- Studio Arts: Painting). Once upon a time, she left the corporate design world and worked for Flipside Games as a 2D game artist. This lasted for five whole weeks, after which they promptly went out of business and closed down. She returned to corporate design and now works as the senior graphic designer for a cosmetics / health care company, and does freelance art for various comic publishers and independent teams. She makes games for fun because they make her happy, and because Guybrush Threepwood will always be her One True Hero. You can view her art portfolio at www.LiezlBuenaventura.com
Joshua Liao – programmer, game designer
Josh is a graduate of Computer Science from ADMU (BS- Computer Science). He used to make corporate business applications, which is exactly as boring as it sounds. He likes low-brow humor, gore, and adventure games. The first game he ever programmed was a Hangman game on Apple II.
