5th Annual Book Tournament Results – Round 1, Malazan Empire Bracket

Round 1 of the 5th Annual BSCreview Book Tournament is nearly done, with only the Westeros Bracket still in play (until tomorrow morning, Monday 3/28).  The first two brackets have already opened round 2, so make sure you go and vote in the current polls for the Middle Earth and Forgotten Realms brackets.  Here are the results for round 1 of the Malazan Empire Bracket:

No. 1 A Conspiracy of Kings by Megan Whalen Turner lost out to no. 16 Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor, which claimed 65% of the votes.

2 seed Bayou Moon by Ilona Andrews was beaten out by 15 seed The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, with a surprisingly low (for a work that hyped) 55%.

In this bracket’s most-voted on match, no. 3 The Black Prism by Brent Weeks killed Ian Cameron Esselmont’s no. 14 Stone Wielder with a ridiculous 89%–our widest margin of victory yet.

In our narrowest margin of victory, Gail Carriger’s no. 4 Changeless just barely squeaked past no. 13 Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi, with only 51% of the votes.

5 seed Corvus by Paul Kearney lost to 12 seed Salute the Dark by Adrian Tchaikovsky, which held 59% of the votes.

No. 6 Echo by Jack McDevitt was taken out by no. 11 Passion Play by Beth Bernobich, which garnered 58% of the votes.

I lost one of my champions when Philippa Ballantine’s 7 seed Geist took down my favorite, no. 10 The Midnight Mayor, or, the Inauguration of Matthew Swift by Kate Griffin with a solid 62% of the votes.

And finally no. 8  The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin handily crushed no. 9 Kill the Dead by Richard Kadrey, finding favor with 75% of the voters.

So there were the winners…where do they go next?

As I’ve said many times before and since, seeding does not reflect our view of a work’s strength; and, make sure you are leaving comments in support of your champion(s)!  You never know when you could sway a swing voter, and in some of our matches thus far even a vote or two could have changed the outcome.  So stay tuned, keep voting, and get to commenting!
