5th Annual Book Tournament Results – Round 1, Middle Earth Bracket

The voting has drawn to a close on Round 1 of the tournament for the Middle Earth Bracket.  We’re still working to get the results visible in the closed polls–apologies if we can’t make it happen–but here’s a quick run-down of the results and a preview of the next round of voting, which opens tomorrow (March 24).

The Bards of Bone Plain by Patricia McKillip certainly lived up to its number 1 seeding, despite that not being an intentional view of strength of work, because it handily beat no.16, Wolfsangel by M.D. Lachlan, with 77% of the votes.

Bitter Seeds by Ian Tregillis (2 seed) fell to no. 15 Troubled Waters by Sharon Shinn, which took 60% of the votes.

In the most-voted-on match of this round, three seed Amanda Downum’s The Bone Palace went down to no. 14 Terminal State by Jeff Somers.

No. 4 Cold Magic by Kate Elliot beat out no. 13 Stealing Fire by Jo Graham with a whopping 81% of the votes–the largest margin of victory in this bracket.

Steampunk 5 seed Dreadnought by Cherie Priest took out no. 12 Shadowheart by Tad Williams with 67% of the votes.

K.J. Parker’s 6 seed The Folding Knife knocked out no. 13 The Ruling Sea by Robert V. Redick, claiming 69% of the votes.

In the closest match of the bracket, no. 7 The House on Durrow Street by Galen Beckett fell to 10 seed Native Star by M.K. Hobson, with 54% of the votes.

And finally no. 8 Jade Man’s Skin by Daniel Fox cruised to victory over no. 9 Machinery of Light by David J. Williams, bringing in 75% of the votes.

On Thursday, March 24 the following matches will occur in Round 2 for the Middle Earth Bracket:

  • 1. The Bards of Bone Plain against 8. Jade Man’s Skin

Damn, many of my favorites (and some really good books) went down in this round. Stealing Fire and The House on Durrow Street are both very good. I can recommend them to any who enjoy historical fantasy.
