5th Annual Book Tournament Results – Round 2, Middle Earth and Forgotten Realms Brackets
Round 2 is halfway through, with our first two brackets drawing to a close this morning. The Middle Earth and Forgotten Realms brackets will both enter round 3 tomorrow, Friday, April 1. In the meantime, let’s talk results from round 2.
Middle Earth Bracket
Fan favorite in the comments, no. 1 The Bards of Bone Plain by Patricia McKillip fell to no. 8 Jade Man’s Skin by Daniel Fox, which took 64% of the vote.
One of my personal favorites from 2010, 15 seed Troubled Waters by Sharon Shinn, just barely lost out to 10 seed Native Star by M.K. Hobson, which garnered 53% favor.
No. 14 Terminal State by Jeff Somers continued its hot run, winning over K.J. Parker’s no. 6 The Folding Knife with a solid 69% in the widest margin of victory and the most-voted on match in this round for this bracket.
Finally, 4 seed Cold Magic by Kate Elliot holds out against 5 seed Dreadnought by Cherie Priest, and moves to round 3 with 55% of the votes.
This means that in round 3 for Middle Earth the following matches will occur:
8. Jade Man’s Skin by Daniel Fox against 4. Cold Magic by Kate Elliot
VS
10. Native Star by M.K. Hobson against 14. Terminal State by Jeff Somers.
Round 4, between the winners of these two matches for control of the bracket, will be Thursday, April 7, which means voting for round 3 will close in the morning on Wednesday, April 6.
Forgotten Realms Bracket
No. 1 Wild Hunt by Margaret Ronald went down hard to no. 8 I Shall Wear Midnight by Terry Pratchet, which took 69% of the votes.
15 seed Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay takes a surprising victory over 10 seed Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins, given the latter’s commercial success, with a respectable 64% of the votes.
Mark Hodder’s no. 14 The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack stomps Kay Kenyon’s no. 11 Prince of Storms with 74%, the widest margin of victory and the most-voted on match of this bracket in round 2.
And finally, no. 4 Changes by Jim Butcher knocks out no. 12 Servant of the Underworld by Aliette de Bodard with 73% of the votes.
This means that in round 3 the following matches will occur for the Forgotten Realms Bracket:
8. I Shall Wear Midnight by Terry Pratchet against 4. Changes by Jim Butcher.
15. Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay against 14. The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack by Mark Hodder.
VS
Round 4, for control of the bracket, will kick off Thursday, April 7, between the winners of the above two matches, so this round will close Wednesday the 6th.
Don’t forget that the other two brackets, Malazan Empire and Westeros, are still in play for round 2, so go and vote on them if you haven’t already. And come back tomorrow to get round 3 started!
